First day covers (FDCs) are envelopes with newly issued stamps attached that are posted, cancelled or date stamped on their first day of issue. The covers usually have some sort of illustration, photo, painting and text which relates to the stamps being issued or the occasion being celebrated. It should be noted here that sometimes first day covers are confused with Commemorative Covers - to be sure watch out for the FDI / first day of issue mark in the cancellation stamp and that the date corresponds to the first day of issue recorded by the post office. Postmarks vary from those issued by the Philatelic bureau, to post office counters or are sometimes especially cancelled by authorised bodies such as the House of Commons, House of Lords and Buckingham Palace.
